How to create an SMS campaign in Brevo

We recently deployed a SMS campaign for one of our customers. His sending tool didn't offer the SMS option, so we opened a Brevo account for the occasion.

Among its advantages, Brevo lets you create an account in just a few clicks, with a freemium version. It's also a French company that we support and enjoy working with, and one of the first tools to implement the expiration dates in emailsSo, without missing a beat, we turned to them for this project.

Steps to create an SMS campaign

Obviously, the prerequisite here: have a Brevo account! If you haven't already done so, you'll need to create an account.

Reading content isn't everything. The best way is to talk to us.

  • From the home page or your campaigns page, simply click on Create a campaign. The following pop-up window appears :
  • Choose the SMS option and name your campaign (with a clear nomenclature, defined in advance?).
  • From the content editing mode, you can add your text (left-hand column) and preview it (right-hand column).
  • The SMS can contain links and images, but these will only be visible to US recipients.
  • As with an email campaign, it is possible toadd a personal message to your SMShere the first name, for example.
  • Depending on the length of your text, this will count as one or more SMS messages, i.e. credits. 1 SMS = 153 characters.
  • To comply with French legislation, you must include an unsubscribe option in your SMS messages. To do this, simply insert the code [STOP_CODE], which will be automatically replaced by Brevo when the message is sent. Special case: only transactional SMS messages are not required to include an unsubscribe option (as is the case for transactional emails, by the way?).
  • Additional options at the bottom of the left-hand column let you activate special characters and, above all, automatically shorten links. This last option is essential if you wish to track clicks on your campaign (and also reduce the number of characters in your SMS, which could save you credits at the same time...).
  • Once you've validated your content, set the sender's name for your campaign. Please note that the maximum length is 11 characters.
  • Would you like to get a quick proof for the road? To do so, click on Send a test SMS and enter your mobile number. Please note that you will be blocked at this stage if :
    • you have not yet purchased SMS credits.
    • the mobile number to which you wish to send the test SMS is not in your contact database.
  • To buy SMS credits, simply go to the top of your screen: Consumption & Packages > WhatsApp & SMS > Get more credits.
  • Finally, once your SMS has been validated, all you have to do is program it to be sent to your contact list, and you're in the bag!
