For this month of July, I have selected and analyzed an email fromIbis received in my Yahoo Inbox... And on top of that, Ibis is celebrating its 50th anniversary! But what is Ibis?
Ibis is a hotel brand owned by the Accor group and created in 1974.
Usually, I select my emails directly from my Gmail and Hotmail accounts. Today, I've decided to choose an email from my historical mail account, namely Yahoo (or Ymail to be precise - a domain owned by Yahoo). Special feature (which is important), Yahoo supports BIMI therefore displays the company logo with (or even without) VMC certification.
The pluses that caught my attention:
As with every analysis, I always start with the points that caught my attention, and here I'll focus on authentication:
Authentication SPF : Ras! Ibis uses Salesforce Marketing Cloud to send its communications. The SPF configuration at SFMC is perfect, with an alignment of the MailFrom domain (in slack mode) and the sender's domain and a qualifier. strict.
* SPF (MailFrom): bounce.mail.all.com
Domain aligned with the sender domain, a STRICT qualifier is used.
Authentication DKIM : Ras! The domain signed with DKIM is identical to the sending domain, so the domains are perfectly aligned. The encryption key used is 2048-Bit!
* DKIM (From): mail.all.com
' Domain aligned with the sending domain, the signed domain is the sending domain.
Authentication DMARC We can see two positive points about DMARC, even if there is a negative one. The first concerns the configured security policy, which is at reject (nickel). The second concerns the deployment of DMARC, with a record present on both the sender sub-domain and the root domain.
* DMARC (From): mail.all.com
' REJECT policy (p=reject) with filtering at 100% but no RUA defined :'
* DMARC (root) :all.com
' REJECT policy (p=reject) with filtering at 100% but no RUA defined :'
Authentication BIMI A BIMI record is present on the sender sub-domain. The big plus is that Accor has purchased a VMC brand certificate from Digicert, which means that their logo is present in the Yahoo Inbox with the purple checkmark (classy)! On the downside, the logo is that of Accor and not Ibis, but is this really a negative point given that the sending domain is Accor's domain?
* BIMI: mail.all.com
' Valid logo and VMC trademark certificate registered with Digicert!
* BIMI (root): all.com
No BIMI records found on the root domain :'
The List-unsubscribe The List-unsubscribe feature is present in the email, and Yahoo offers it at the bottom of the page on the mobile version. This feature displayed by Yahoo also shows that the sender has a good reputation!
The - that caught my attention :
As for the points of improvement in this Ibis email, I see several possible optimizations:
Authentication DMARC I see a major problem with DMARC. Accor doesn't track any DMARC reports since no RUA attribute is set on the sender subdomain and on the root domain. This means that Accor doesn't get any feedback and therefore can't see if the domain (or one of the subdomains) is being used by a malicious person or if a legitimate email flow would be misauthenticated!
Authentication BIMI Even if the registration is perfectly configured and compliant on the sending sub-domain, this is not the case for the root domain, which has no BIMI registration.
* BIMI (root): all.com
No BIMI records found on the root domain :'
The Dark Mode Dark Mode display is almost perfect, with a few exceptions:
- A white space appears at the beginning of the email;
- Almost all images have white borders or a white background.
Email size on mobile : This email for mobile reading is incredibly long. The number of blocks should have been reduced for mobile reading, not sure everyone would read the whole email on their phone.
